MOUNTAINS OF SERBIA
KOPAONIK
Kopaonik, the biggest mountain of central Serbia, spreads its wide mountain-ridge 82.7km long. Due to good roads and railways, the mountain can be reached in five hours' time even starting from Belgrade, which is about 250km away. Kopaonik was named after its ore resources (kopati-to dig). As regards climate, Kopaonik significantly differs from the neighboring mountains, a fact which can be seen from the meteorological records for Raška, Kosovska Mitrovica and Ravni Kopaonik. The January temperatures at the three meteorological stations are -0.4°C for the first, -0.2°C for the second and -5.2°C for the third. The shifting of the temperature maximum of Ravni Kopaonik to august indicates it has a sub-alpine climate. The winter temperatures on this mountain are not very low as a result of its southern position, flatness and wide-open terrain. The snow does not melt for five months (its duration is in average 159 days a year). This is why the ski season is long and stable here.
With 200 sunny days a year this mountain seems to have been made for a resort with plenty of fresh air. Such a climate has a great effect on health, a fact that is acknowledged by the experts as well. Kopaonik is a health spa "with one spring bordering upon another". There are ten springs of sulfuric water there, their temperatures being from 38°C to 57°C. The mountain is noted for its abundance of strawberries, blackberries, raspberries and bilberries.

Tara Mountain has been declared the National Park in 1988. Tara is very suitable for the development of tourism on all levels. The summer period is full of sunny days, while the winter period has a lot of snowy days, so together with the existing hotels and with good-hearted natives, there is a possibility for the very pleasant holiday. There are 53 mammal species and 153 bird species. National Park can be proud of its hunting grounds full of bears, chamois and other species, which is a rare example. Considering the flora, the Tara Mountain has a very important advantage because of the Pancic`s Spruce, which is protected by the present law. It is the representative of the endemic relict, which is still in its full development. Dr Josif Pancic, the world-famous naturalist, discovered this spruce, which nowadays bears his name, in 1877. The Pancic`s Spruce became the pride of the Tara Mountain, and its importance attracts the world’s attention. The areas outside the forest are numerous flowery meadows, suitable for raising bees and for the production of the high quality honey (forest, black and meadow), which is good for the health protection.
